How CS2 cases work: the key is the stable cost
The case is only a box. Valve sells the key that opens it as a second purchase, and the skin that comes out is a third thing, decided by a roll.
Two purchases, not one: the container and its key
A Counter-Strike weapon case does nothing while it sits in your inventory. To open it in the official client you spend a key sold through Steam. That key price is the steady part of the bill, while the case price follows supply.
Each case holds a fixed list of finishes and one rare special slot, usually a knife or a pair of gloves.
The result is picked at the moment you open it. Wear is rolled then too and stored as a float, which is why playing matches with the gun never scratches it further.
Downside: the roll cannot be undone. Hoping for Factory New and getting Field-Tested leaves you with Field-Tested, so settle what you are paying for before you buy the key.
Weekly drop or closed pool: where a case comes from
Prime players can earn a weekly drop just by playing, and Valve rotates which containers are in that pool. A case that still drops stays common and usually cheap. Once it leaves the pool, new copies stop appearing, and the container itself can turn into the item people trade.
Other containers came from operations or the Armory rather than the weekly drop. The Fever Case and the Gallery Case follow that newer route.
A blog list of 'active cases' is a snapshot in time. Whether new copies still reach the market is decided by the in-game list.
Third-party spinners do not open Valve's container
A site that lets you open 'cases' against a balance is running its own game, often paid out in skins or site credit. Its free case is a promotional balance, and the offer includes withdrawal rules, deposit requirements and one-account limits. That is not the weekly drop. Farming it across many accounts breaks the operator's rules.
This reference deals with the official container, the float system, and the markets where the resulting skin is bought and sold. If you want the math behind a Valve case, start with odds and expected value.
Questions
Do you need a key to open a CS2 case?
Yes. An official weapon case opens only with a key bought through Steam, and the case and key carry separate prices.
Does playing wear down a skin?
No. The float is set once, when the item is created, and using the weapon never changes it.
